City votes permits needed for competitive kite-flying in parks

TORONTO, Ont. – Competitive kite-flyers will have to pay a fee to fly in Toronto parks and could be fined if they do not have a permit.

The City of Toronto’s Parks and Environment Committee has voted to charge kite fighters about $13 an hour.

The fine would be $300.

The committee also wants city council to ask the federal government to ban the importation of kite string that is chemically treated or made with pieces of glass.

All kite flying is banned from Milliken Park in Scarborough following complaints about kite fighters leaving their busted kites and string in trees.
