New liquor laws take effect June 1

TORONTO, On. – As of next weekend, Ontario residents will be able to drink liquor longer and more freely.

The Liberal government confirmed, Friday, that the changes talked about by Attorney General Chris Bentley last week will take effect June 1.

The new provincial regulations will mean festivals and events right across Ontario, including in the City of Toronto, can set aside larger areas where people will be allowed to walk around with an alcoholic beverage in hand.

A release from the McGuinty government said, the changes are meant to provide Ontarians with a more enjoyable experience, and improve tourism and local economies.

680News reporter Kevin Misener was breaking the news along Danforth Avenue, the site of the hugely popular Taste of the Danforth, Friday morning.

“I am absolutely all for it. We’re way behind the times and it assumes that people will be responsible and those that aren’t – well, they will have to pay the price for it,” Roy said.

But while some felt Canadians expressed enthusiasm for the new rules, saying it’s on par with Europe’s more relaxed attitude, others said this could incite more drinking, rowdiness and violence sometimes associated with alcohol.
