Consequences for not getting enough sleep

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Do you wake up groggy and cranky every morning?  Are you yawning while you drive to work?  A new study finds some shocking consequences for missing out on some much needed rest.

The study in Men’s Health Magazine finds those who get six hours of sleep a night or less, are four times more likely to die of any cause.  And that’s mainly because sleep affects your immune system, weight and blood pressure.

Editor Peter Moore says one of the biggest reasons people don’t sleep is they’re worried about money.  “If you actually pick a random number like 546 [then] countdown to zero, by sevens… you have to do quite a lot of mental math and that really does crowd out all the disturbing thoughts.”

Another solution is avoid checking your email or text messages before going to bed as it will only stimulate your brain, instead of turning it off.  “If you’re tempted to look at it, you’ll be hit by that bright screen.  So, let’s go ahead and leave that smartphone in the kitchen.  If you need an alarm clock they cost $8.95 down at the store.”

The top reasons people don’t sleep: money problems and worried they’re not going to fall asleep.
