Local journalist missing in Syria

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A journalist from North Vancouver is missing in Syria.  Fred Parvaz last heard from his daughter Dorothy on Thursday.

She’s an accomplished journalist who graduated from UBC, then got her masters in journalism from the University of Arizona.  She currently works for Al-Jazeera.

Her dad says she was heading to an assignment in Damascus.  “She arrived at the Damascus airport, according to the airline manifest.  But then she didn’t check into her hotel.  So, we are assuming that she is being held at the airport.” Fred says she’s a global citizen who has worked for news outlets all over the world.

He is asking people to write letters and do whatever they can to put pressure on the Syrian government.

Todd Barker, Parvaz’s fiance, says she was quite aware that Syria can be a dangerous place. “She was telling me this is really what she wants to do, and I knew that there is no way I could change her mind,” he explains.

Roughly 2,000 people have joined a Facebook group called ‘Free Dorothy Parvaz,’ in hopes of having her released.
