Election day may draw out voters in record numbers

TORONTO, Ont. – The record turnout at the advance polls may be an indication of things to come on Monday and some Canadians who have never voted before say they will be marking an “x” on election day.

One woman told 680News social media is motivating to cast her ballot her after six years of not voting.

“It’s sort of a bit of peer pressure because you see a lot of people, especially on Facebook, saying you should vote, you should have a voice because it’s really important.” She said.

For some people it is the party’s agenda that is getting them out to the polls.  One man told 680News, he is casting his vote based on two things, the economy and Canada’s future.

“Partly because of the economy and I think there are a lot more questions as to what direction we’re going to go in – from everything from health care to policing.” He said.

However, most people who spoke to 680News said that their motivation to vote was simply their right to do so.

“It is basically my democratic right and my way to express my views.” One man told 680News.

This election is also sparking the interest of younger voters.  One woman told 680News that although her son is three years away from voting, the election has caught his attention.

“My son is almost 16 and he and I talk about it almost every day. It’s quite interesting to have that adult conversation with someone who cannot vote yet.”
