Simple checklist could help doctors screen for autism in infants

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Doctors say a simple checklist given to parents of children before they reach their first birthday could help to diagnose autism.

Physicians in San Diego tested the tool on over 10,000 babies at their one-year check up, and examined how the infants babbled, gestured and interacted with others.

130 youngsters were identified as being at risk of autism. Of those, 32 were eventually diagnosed with the condition.

Researchers believe more work is needed to verify the accuracy of the questionnaire, but said it may prove valuable in finding more at-risk babies in the future.
