Stateside shopping rises as loonie soars

TORONTO, Ont. – With the Canadian dollar flying high, shopping stateside has become even more appealing.

A new report from Visa finds Canadian travellers are the number one foreign spenders when it comes to using their Visa cards.

Paul Wilke with Visa told 680News Canadians used their cards to spend $9.2-billion in 2010, up 18 per cent from the year before.

“It’s what you mostly expect from travellers – hotels, restaurants and general retail.” said Wilke.

Karen Fashana with the Buffalo and Niagara Convention and Visitors Bureau tells 680News Canadian spending is huge for the local economy.

“We try to reach out to Canadians as much as we can because we know they’re leaving their money behind in this community.” Fashana told 680News.

The Buffalo and Niagara Convention and Visitors Bureau even has a newsletter that is designed to appeal to Canadians.
