TORONTO, Ont. – It is the Easter weekend and a busy time for the Easter bunny. Every year, many people opt to buy a real bunny for a child.
Animals groups are asking people to not buy a real “Easter bunny” on the spur of the moment.
Ruth-Ann Drummond, shelter co-coordinator at the Toronto Humane Society, told 680News that parents should not be tempted to buy a pet rabbit on impulse.
“There is a lot to know about their care. They’re a long term commitment; they live 8 to 12 years. They require very specialized diets a lot of exercise and socialization.”
“There is a lot of work that you need to put into them,” said Drummond.
Shelters tend to see an increase in the number of rabbits surrendered one to two months after Easter.
