Municipalities asking province to pay higher rent

TORONTO, Ont. – In what they’ve labelled the “heads and beds” levy, municipalities across the province are banding together and asking province to pay them more rent.

Mayors have proposed an increase from $75 to $135 per head or bed.

The fee is paid by the province to cities instead of property taxes for institutions such as universities and hospitals.

The mayor of Kingston argues that the rate has remained unchanged since 1987. All the municipalities agree that the rate no longer represents a fair exchange for providing local resources to support provincial services.
