TORONTO, Ont. – Nearly half of Canadians said steeper fuel and food prices are taking a significant bite out of their budgets, according to a new survey.

The quarterly RBC Consumer Outlook report found that 45 per cent of Canadians said rising prices were significantly affecting them.

But the impact was being felt the most by residents of Ontario, Atlantic Canada and Quebec, according to responses.

Managing debt remained the highest priority for consumers, with 39 per cent of Canadians planning to pay off as much of their debt as possible.

Thirty per cent of respondents said they were focused on spending less, while 23 per cent are looking to save or invest more.

Canadians’ concerns about the economy remain relatively unchanged since the last survey three months earlier.
