Mark McEwan picked as Top Chef Canada judge

TORONTO, Ont. – Chef Mark McEwan certainly knows his way around a kitchen. He has cooked for Pope John Paul II, has hosted several Food Network programs and opened two successful restaurants.

His 30-plus years in the culinary industry is why McEwan has decided to judge other Canadians who are hopeful to follow in his footsteps on the new television show, Top Chef Canada.

McEwan told 680News if contestants really want to win, they better be ready to work.

“I think it’s a real horse race, you better be careful what you ask for if you really want to be a part of it, because it’s not for the faint of heart,” McEwan said.

However, he is warning potential contestants that television has helped glamorized the life of a chef.

“You hear all these young chefs coming up saying, I want to work in the business for a while but I’d love to have my own TV-show,” McEwan said. “I’m thinking okay – I’m 35-years-later and I’m doing it, chefs still have to work really long hours.”

As a judge, McEwan said he will certainly be tough, but always fair.

“I don’t think I’m outrageous at all, I’m looking for well-prepared, well-presented and really flavourful food,” McEwan said.

Top Chef Canada premieres April 11 at  9 p.m. on the Food Network.
