Canucks win Presidents’ Trophy

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver has defeated LA 3-1 to lock up the NHL’s Presidents’ Trophy. The trophy is awarded to the top team during the regular season in the 30-club National Hockey League.

Defenceman Christian Ehrhoff scored the game-winning goal with less than a second left in the second period. This came after Ryan Kesler was just under a second late when he scored at the end of the first frame.

Kesler added a five-on-three power play goal in the third. It was the first time the Canucks scored with a two-man advantage all season. NHL scoring leader Daniel Sedin now has 100 points after a goal and an assist.

The Kings were out-shot 16-0 in the third period. Roberto Luongo now has 37 wins, which leads the league.

Alain Vigneault’s crew has won 12 of their last 13 games. The Presidents’ Trophy winner is guaranteed home-ice advantage in all four rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs, provided the team advances in each round. The last team to win the Presidents’ Trophy and the Stanley Cup was the 2008 Detroit Red Wings.
