Canadian man arrested in Maine after bogus ‘detonator’ threat on bus: police

HOULTON, Maine – Maine police say a Canadian national who threatened a bus with a fake detonator switch has been arrested in Houlton, near the Canadian border.

Police say the 50-year-old man surrendered just before dawn Thursday as a tactical squad prepared to fire tear gas into the bus.

Police say the accused began making threats before the bus reached an Irving gas station Wednesday night in Houlton. The driver and seven passengers left, leaving only the man on the bus.

Houlton Police Chief Butch says that during the nine-hour episode, the man claimed to have a detonator switch, which was later determined to be a video game controller.

Police identified the accused as Daniel Thomas Maccabee. His last known address was in Madison, Wis.

He’s charged with assault, aggravated reckless conduct and terrorizing.
