Residents evacuted following train derailment

Twenty homes were evacuated after a train became derailed along the CN track between Cobourg and Port Hope in Hamilton Township on Sunday.

The incident took place around 12:20 p.m., south of Theatre Road, along the lakeshore. Highway 2 was closed in both directions around the vicinity of the derailment.

“We don’t know the exact cause of the derailment, as a result there was a fire, but we’re not sure whether that fire was a result of a car that had ruptured and caught fire or as a result of the cars derailing and causing a grass fire, but in any event, the fire is out,” said Sergeant Peter Thivierge of the Port Hope Police Service.

VIA Rail service on routes from Montreal-Toronto and Ottawa-Toronto was interrupted. VIA Officials say alternate transportation will be in place until the area is cleared.

VIA will provide alternate transportation by motorcoach for passengers with existing reservations, while no new bookings will be accepted for trains on either route until the problem is cleared.
