Food supplement needed for thousands on social assistance

LONDON, Ont. – An advocacy group made an emotional plea for financial assistance at an Oxford County council meeting Wednesday night.

Two members of the advocacy group Operation Sharing told the council they desperately need help getting a $100/month healthy food supplement for all adults on social assistance.

Nearly 3700 adults in the small community near London, Ontario are not even getting their basic needs covered, according to Operating Sharing member Marg Murray.

“They have to make really difficult decisions, impossible decisions, about whether or not they use their social assistance money to pay rent or to pay for food, let alone anything else,” Murray said.

The request for immediate help has been forwarded to the premier, finance minister and social services.
