First it was a red-light district on Toronto Island, and now, Coun. Giorgio Mammoliti is proposing converting Ontario Place to a world-class casino.
The suggestion comes as a new creative way of dealing with the city’s half-billion dollar budgetary shortfall.
Mammoliti believes the province and city need to start thinking outside the box and looking for alternate revenue streams.
He told the Toronto Sun, building a first-class casino that would draw in visitors from all over Canada and the United States could provide a solution for next year’s budget deficit.
The idea comes after Ontario Place asked for suggestions about how to turn the neglected piece of land into a year-round tourist attraction.
Some consider the land one of Toronto’s most valuable assets, and are concerned it’s only used several months a year.
Mammoliti believes the casino should be made into a major issue in the upcoming provincial election campaign, and has suggested the city experiments with the idea by temporarily docking a gambling boat outside Ontario Place.
