VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – NDP leadership candidate John Horgan says if he becomes premier he will turf BC Lottery Corporation’s gaming website PlayNow.com. He says the website has been riddled with problems.
Horgan says he’s worried about the criminal element in online gambling. “The prospect of the province of British Columbia participating in that activity, I think, is repugnant to most British Columbians. We need to reduce gaming addictions. I believe online gaming only increases gaming addictions.”
He compares the online casino business to the ‘wild west’, an atmosphere that encourages crime and targets addicts.
But Rich Coleman, the minister responsible for gaming, wants to know where Horgan will find the lost revenue. “We expect that it’s going to make about $30 million this year. $30 million that I don’t know where Mr. Horgan would [get] to help pay for education and health care and other things.”
If he becomes premier, Horgan has pledged to immediately restore $30 million to charities and non-profits.
