Chunky Canucks

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Canadians are getting heavier, but at least we have always been able to say we are not as fat as the Americans.

Well, you can forget that smug “aren’t we better than our neighbours to the south” attitude; Canadians are catching up fast.

A joint study by Statistics Canada and the US Centers for Diease Control and Prevention shows just over one-in-three Americans is obese; in Canada, it’s almost one-in-four. But the scales are tipping, with the latest numbers showing the increase in the US obesity rate is actually slowing while it remains steady in Canada. The gap in childhood obesity is already much smaller.

Over the past 20 years, women aged 20 to 39 and men aged 60 to 74 saw the biggest increase in obesity rate.
