Start your engines: auto show roars into town

TORONTO, Ont. – North American automakers are shining bright at the opening of the Canada International Autoshow, Friday.

The first thing you’ll notice about this year’s auto show is that the excitement is back.

The auto industry is basking in a successful rebound, with products from the North American automakers leading the charge.

They include the Chevrolet Orlando small SUV, the redesigned Ford Explorer, and the all-new Chrysler 300.

Toronto Star wheels editor Mark Richardson called it ‘the year of Detroit.’

“I mean, we just saw in the car and the truck of the year, that it was won by Ford and by Chevy. General Motors and Ford have got some really interesting, practical, affordable, useful vehicles out there. They have really turned the corner,” he said.

Several vehicles are making their Canadian debuts at the auto show, including the 2012 Toyota Pruis V — the new wagon version of the popular hybrid — the breathtaking BMW 6-Series Cabriolet and the funky three-door Hyundai Veloster.

Compact car buyers should check out the 2011 Hyundai Elantra, and for the driving purists, there’s the new 2012 Audi TT RS.

The Canadian International Autoshow is being held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre until February 27.
