Report: Major changes made by RCMP since Dziekanski’s death

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A police watchdog says the RCMP have made substantial changes since Robert Dziekanski died after being Tasered at YVR in 2007 and accepted all but one of the group’s 23 findings.

Lisa-Marie Inman with the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP says when they do a report like this, Mounties usually go along with about 85 per cent of what they find. “[The acceptance rate] is generally higher with respect to the bigger high-profile incidents, but this one in particular has a very good acceptance rate.”

This time, they accepted just about everything, except for one minor disagreement on what a use of force expert had to say about when a Taser should be used.

Inman says most of the changes have to do with Tasers. “There are changes in its policy surrounding the use of conducted energy weapons. There is a different threshold for their use now. It’s a little bit higher.”

Inman’s group received more complaints about this case than any other.
