People skeptical Vancouver is close to ending homelessness

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The City of Vancouver may be patting itself on the back over its plan to end homelessness, but it doesn’t seem like everyone sees things the same way.

The mayor says we’re just 450 units away from making sure no one needs to sleep on the streets. While Gregor Robertson may measure success by counting units, a lot of his citizens judge things by what they see.

One man says, “I see people sleep in doorways. If I go to Oppenheimer Park, I’ll see people in little tents there. Right on Cordova and Gore, there’s a person who’s had a huge tent there for maybe six months now.”

The story isn’t much better in other parts of the city. One man along West Broadway tells us he’s seen people pushing carts filled with all of their belongings; not because they want to take that stuff with them, but because they have no where to put it.

One man says, “I haven’t seen much change, I see guys every morning. I’m usually up early to go to work, and I see guys in doorways all over the place downtown,” he says.

Most say they still greet panhandlers outside the doughnut shop and live with the rattle of their carts.
