Supervision ends at Toronto Catholic District School Board: education minister

TORONTO – Ontario’s education minister says provincial supervision has ended at the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

Leona Dombrowsky says the trustees elected in October now have full authority as the board.

The province stepped in in 2008, saying financial troubles and trustee misspending had eroded public confidence and undermined the board’s authority.

Richard Alway was appointed supervisor to help the board regain financial stability and help trustees learn proper practices.

Dombrowsky says the board’s operating budget is now balanced, better financial reporting practices are in place and the board has improved its ties with the community.

She says Alway made several recommendations that she intends to implement, such as bringing respect and professionalism back to the job of trustees.

“We have worked hard in the past two years to make important changes, successfully working with the board to manage its finances and get back on track,” Dombrowsky said in a statement Friday.

“The board can now start a new chapter in working for the people it serves and focus on implementing important programs like full-day kindergarten to help our youngest learners get a strong start in life,” the minister added.

Nancy Kirby, president of the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association, welcomed the news that the supervisor’s stint had ended.

“It is important to have trustees returned to their full governance role so that the perspectives they were elected to represent can be rightfully considered in the decisions that are made by the board,” Kirby said in a statement.
