Ontario gives police another $15 million to target gangs and illegal guns

TORONTO, Ont. – Seventeen police forces across Ontario will split another $15 million in provincial funding over two years to deal with guns and gangs.

The money will be used to increase support for specialized police teams that root out gang activities in communities.

About $1 million will go to municipal and First Nations police forces not currently involved in the guns and gangs strategy.

The provincial plan is modelled on the Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy, and has led to more than 1,100 arrests and 2,000 criminal charges in three years.

In addition, police across Ontario have removed more than 200 illegal guns from the streets since 2007.

Thunder Bay Chief Robert Herman, president of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, said the funding will help get illegal guns out of communities.
