Ford ready to spend $40-million on new jobs

TORONTO, On. – Despite the belt tightening at City Hall, Mayor Rob Ford said he ready to spend $40-million on new jobs this year.

Budget documents revealed Monday showed that while 470 positions have been eliminated, another 518 are being added for 2011 alone, which doesn’t include posts paid for out of the capital, solid waste and water budgets.

The Toronto Transit Commission gets the bulk of the new workers as ridership grows, while almost 50 new employees will work at the newly renovated Sony Centre.

Councillor Shelley Carroll, the former budget chief, told The Globe and Mail, staff increases are hard to ignore on the TTC because every year it attracts more passengers, requiring new drivers.
