Edgewater Casino public hearing scheduled for February 17

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A public hearing on the proposal for the massive expansion of the Edgewater Casino at BC Place has been set for February 17. If the plan is approved, the Edgewater will be the biggest casino in the province.

City staff say it will be a “destination casino” that will bring in people from all over. But several councillors say they’re concerned because an estimated 21,000 people in Vancouver are problem gamblers and the Edgewater could drive that number up. Councillors also raised concerns about organized crime and money laundering at casinos.

City manager Penny Ballem says it’s not the locals the casino is hoping to attract.

“The target audience is broader, and includes a significant international component, who will hopefully take their problems with them when they leave,” remarks Ballam.
