Areas of Toronto may lose sidewalk plows

TORONTO, Ont. – Those living in Etobicoke, North York or Scarborough may not have the luxury of sidewalk plows for much longer.

Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday said residents in these neighbourhoods should be required to shovel their own sidewalks, as residents in Toronto and East York do now.

Currently, plows continue clearing sidewalks in three former municipalities, a perk which has been carried over following amalgamation in 1998.

According to The Globe the Mail, sidewalk clearing costs the city up to $10 million per year.

Holyday said it makes sense to only clear sidewalks for the most vulnerable, such as seniors and the disabled.
