The national non-smoking week kicks off tomorrow

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Canadian Cancer Society wants BC government to pay for products that help people quit smoking.

Kathryn Seely with the society says the provincial government should cover the cost of Nicotine Replacement Therapies. She says her organization has been lobbying for this for a while, and the upcoming National Non-Smoking Week would be the perfect time for the province to get on board. “They have been looking into it, and I understand that while they fund some ‘quit now’ services, we are asking them to go further.”

Saskatchewan and Quebec have made the move already. Seely says the Canadian Cancer Society will also be approaching Liberal and NDP leadership candidates to see where they stand.

Meanwhile, Liberal leadership contender Christy Clark says if she becomes the next premier, she will re-invest proceeds from tobacco taxes into nicotine replacement therapies.

No word though, on exactly how that plan would work.
