Former GG Jean to travel to birthplace of Haiti to remember deadly quake

OTTAWA – Former governor general Michaelle Jean will travel to Haiti this week to mark the one-year anniversary of last year’s devastating earthquake.

It will mark her first trip to the country of her birth since she was officially named in November the special envoy to Haiti of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO.

Jean was born in Haiti but settled in Canada as a child.

A contentious and contested election in Haiti followed by violence led the United Nations to ban its staff from travelling there.

The ban has been lifted and Jean will make a 24-hour visit to Port-au-Prince on Wednesday to encourage Haitian reconstruction efforts.

She served as governor general of Canada from September 2005 to September 2010.
