New kids on the high-tech block

TORONTO, Ont. – It is a tech invasion on wheels.

Automakers are crashing major electronic trade shows, showing off cars with mobile WiFi and 3D consoles.

Cars have been turned into rolling Wi-Fi hotspots, outfitted with tablet computers, and even streaming Internet videos.

Audi’s futuristic wheels are cashing in 3D popularity: gauges and displays will pop out at the driver, while turn signals will flash on the windshield.

“So we really feel like we can connect the driver to the Internet and the digital world, […] and provide them with even a better experience as a driver,” Ford CEO Alan Mulally told USA Today.

680News automotive expert Tim Dimopoulos said the emphasis is on safety.

“To keep your eyes on the road, to keep you looking straight ahead, keeps us basically focused on the roads,” he said.
