“Idomo man” set to retire after 40 years

TORONTO, Ont. – It is the end of an era for not only an iconic Toronto business but also for the off beat commercials that were used to promote it.

The ‘Idomo man’ is calling it quits after after 40 years in the furniture business.

Gerrit de Boer, owner of Idomo, has decided to leave the store he built up from the back of his fathers shop.  The 65-year-old told 680News he will be dissolving the business rather than selling it.

“for someone to destroy the image that I had and what I’ve done, I could never hand that to somebody else.” said de Boer.

But Torontonians may know de Boer more for his large, ZZ Top style beard, which he says he has kept because his wife likes it.

“I’ve kept the same women happy now for over forty years because I have a beard.”

He has travelled around the world sourcing furniture for his stores and filming his commercials in exotic locations to get the right “feel and look.”

Idomo’s Downsview store will hold a clearance sale this weekend.
