NDP health critic calls fee hike a $54 million revenue grab

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The NDP’s health critic is accusing the Liberal government of taking part in a $54 million revenue grab that targets seniors in residential care.

Adrian Dix says a fee increase takes effect this Saturday. “For someone who has, before tax, an income of $22,000, it means they will pay an additional 10 per cent of their net income in additional fees as a result of this fee increase.”

He tells us, “This is taking place at a time when Statistics Canada reports that care standards in BC are the lowest in the country. So seniors are being forced to pay more after all their contributions to our province and get less than anywhere else in Canada.”

Dix worries the increase will force seniors to choose between food and medication.
