Google celebrates with festive doodle

It took five designers six months to complete, but the latest Google main page doodle pays tribute to the festive season.

The team spent 250 hours on the design, gathering as broad a set of images as possible.

While it includes Father Christmas, the yule log, and a snowy scene of St. Basil’s cathedral in Moscow, Google has notably steered clear of any overt Christian symbols.

Most of the 17 images portray great international sites such as the Acropolis in Athens, the Great Wall of China, and Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Among the other designs are the Oud — a Middle Eastern guitar — a Pierogi, and distinctive Moroccan henna lamps.

When a mouse rolls over an image, it expands, and if clicked on, takes the user to a list of related websites.

The 17 images will remain on Google for two-and-a-half days before the normal Google logo returns.
