TORONTO, Ont. – City Council voted 28 to 17 in favour to request the province make the Toronto Transit Commission an essential service, Thursday evening.
Should the province decide to pass the legislation, labour strikes by TTC workers would be illegal.
The Amalgamated Transit Union, representing approximately 10,000 TTC workers, is opposing the move.
Mayor Rob Ford said commuters need to be able to rely on public transit, adding that transit strikes cost Toronto’s economy nearly $50 million per day and cause commuters and businesses to suffer.
