Karen Stintz chairs her first TTC meeting Wednesday

TORONTO, Ont. – New TTC chair Karen Stintz is set to conduct her first meeting of the Toronto Transit Commission on Wednesday.

She told The Globe and Mail, that her two main concerns are the smart-card fare payment system and improving cleanliness.

On her website karenstintz.com, she mentions that the Presto card (smart-card fare payment system for public transit in the GTA, Hamilton and Ottawa) would work better than the “open payment” option that the TTC has implemented.

“While the Presto card can manage fare transactions between different transits systems, an open payment system that operates only in the TTC cannot,” Stintz stated on her website.

Her passion for the Presto card derives from an understanding that customer service should be a major priority for the TTC.

“I think it is very important that the TTC consider the users of the transit system when deciding how to spend scarce resources. Limited resources should not be spent on an untested technology that may only benefit a few,” Stintz wrote on her website.

Stintz also said she wants the TTC to be declared an essential service even though past strikes have quickly ended by back to work legislation.
