Mayor of Thunder Bay fighting to save Toronto’s streetcars

A city in northwestern Ontario wants a say in the ongoing debate over the fate of Toronto’s streetcars.

Keith Hobbs, the mayor of Thunder Bay, says he wants to meet with Toronto Mayor Rob Ford to discuss his plan to axe existing contracts that would see hundreds of the cars produced by Bombardier.

The manufacturer is considered one of Thunder Bay’s top employers.

Hobbs said Ford’s promise to abandon streetcars in favour of subways “is very distressing” for Thunder Bay’s workers and economy.

The meeting hasn’t been arranged yet, but Hobbs said he hopes it will take place mid-January.

The Toronto Transit Commission is preparing a report due in January that will look at the effects of cancelling the contracts.
