Expert: George Abbott favourite for premier

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Out of the four confirmed candidates Moira Stilwell, George Abbott, Kevin Falcon and Mike de Jong, SFU political scientist Marjorie Griffin Cohen says Abbott has the most momentum.

Adding he is the front runner at the moment because out of all the candidates, he’s the one that caucus members would most like to work with.  But it all depends on who else decides to join the race.

She adds it’s still very early and a lot can happen between now and the end of February when the leadership vote takes place.

Colin Hansen is a busy man

Meanwhile Colin Hansen has his hands full as fellow MLAs shed their ministries to run for the Liberal leadership.  “Some of my colleagues have joked that I’m going to be having some interesting discussions with myself.”

Hansen added the duties of Health Minister to his role of Finance Minister, as Kevin Falcon tries to become premier.

The health portfolio eats up almost half of the provincial budget.

He explains there’s a healthy tension between the two.  “They are, obviously, two big responsibilities.  I feel comfortable that I’m going to be able to handle those big portfolios during this three-month period.”

Meanwhile, Aboriginal Relations minister Barry Penner has also taken over as Attorney General after Mike de Jong entered the Liberal leadership race.

The “Christy Clark” factor

We should find out this week if former deputy premier Christy Clark will throw her hat into the ring for leader of the BC Liberals.
