Mayor vote on property tax hikes to come down tomorrow

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Metro Vancouver mayor’s council votes tomorrow on whether to increase property taxes to fund major TransLink projects.

You may not like it but TransLink founder George Puil expects Metro Vancouver mayors will vote to increase property taxes as a way to pay for major transportation projects. “They should institute a vehicle charge. They’ve done this in Toronto in 2008. They have done it in Montreal just last week. The vehicle charge is the route to go, the property tax is the worst medium they could use.”

He says hiking property taxes doesn’t make sense because there are people who have property, but never use transit; meanwhile, people who drive cars do use transit.

Puil was part of a vehicle levy plan in the 90s that wasn’t approved. He says it could bring in 160 to 200 million dollars in revenue every year.
