Missing teen’s father makes court appearance

TORONTO, Ont. – Vakhtang Makhniashvili, father of missing teen Mariam Makhniashvili, made a court apperance Wednesday, facing attempted murder charges in connection with a stabbing last week.

In his orange prison jumpsuit, he looked tired, and gazed into the crowd where his wife, Lela, sat looking on in the front row.

His lawyer said the family is coping and taking things one step at a time.

“I had a good talk with [Lela] today, and she’s doing fine. I spoke to [Vakhtang] in the courtroom today.”

The judge has ordered a publication ban on the evidence.

Makhniashvili has also been charged with aggravated assault and fail to comply with recognizance following a double stabbing in the city’s east end on November 4.

A man and a woman were stabbed inside a home at 10 Greenwood Ave., near Queen Street East.

Following the incident, blood stains could be seen on the front porch and a trail of blood was splattered on the sidewalk.

Police told 680News Vakhtang was in the couple’s home where a verbal argument took place, and that ended with the pair being stabbed multiple times.

The man had to undergo emergency surgery. Both injuries are considered to be serious, but non-life-threatening.

After the incident, Vakhtang apparently left the apartment, got into his car, drove straight to a police station and turned himself in to officers at the front desk.
