Montreal’s Johanna Skibsrud wins Scotiabank Giller Prize for debut novel

TORONTO – Johanna Skibsrud has won the $50,000 Scotiabank Giller Prize for her debut novel “The Sentimentalists.”

The book was considered the dark horse for the prize largely because of its limited print.

Gaspereau Press, the publishing house for “The Sentimentalists,” only prints books locally and can only make about 1,000 copies per week.

Skibsrud, 30, was the youngest of this year’s shortlisted authors, and was tearful and seemed overwhelmed as she accepted the prize.

Her first poetry collection, Late Nights With Wild Cowboys, was published in 2008 and was shortlisted for the Gerald Lampert Award.

Skibsrud lives in Montreal but was originally from Scotsburn, Nova Scotia.
