Surrey crime rates improving

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Surrey Mounties say the crime rate continues to drop in the city. Violent crime and property crime rates for 2009 were at levels not seen since the late 90s.

“It’s at its lowest number since 1998, so it’s quite a significant continued downward trend,” says the Surrey RCMP’s Cst. Peter Neily.

But there are some troubling spikes in violent crime numbers. Abductions more than doubled. But Neily says they don’t indicate a trend.

Homicides are up 25 per cent. And there have been sharp increases in firearms offenses and in assaults on police officers.
