Tough sentences given to men involved in Brass Rail murder case

TORONTO, Ont. – Two men convicted of murdering an innocent man who was walking by the Brass Rail strip club near Yonge and Bloor were each handed stiff sentences Monday morning at the University Avenue Courthouse.

The Toronto Sun reported that Edward Paredes, 24, was sentenced to life with no chance of parole for 14 years, while Awet Zekarias, 25, who encouraged Paredes to pull the trigger, will serve an 11 year sentence for manslaughter and receives less credit for time already served.

In April, a jury found Paredes guilty of second degree murder in the death of John O’Keefe, and he was automatically sentenced to life imprisonment.

In court, Madam Justice Mary Lou Bennotto said O’Keefe had a right to walk the streets in safety, just like everyone else, and that those who use firearms cannot be allowed to hijack our sense of community and safety.
