Rick Rypien given six-game suspension

NEW YORK (NEWS1130) – The NHL has ruled on Rick Rypien’s indefinite suspension.

After Rypien met with both Commissioner Gary Bettman and league disciplinarian Colin Campbell in New York City, the NHL has handed down a six-game suspension. The team have also been handed a $25,000 fine.

Canucks President and GM Mike Gillis says, “We understand and respect the League’s decision… While this game is played with passion and intensity, the safety of all of our fans and players is of the utmost importance at all times.”

In a prepared statement, Gillis goes on to say, “Throughout his career Rick has been well respected by his teammates, coaches, fellow players and our community. Rick is a valued member of our organization and we will continue to support him and all of his teammates to ensure incidents like this do not happen in the future.”

Rypien was initially suspended indefinitely after getting into a shoving match with a fan during the Canucks 6-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday.

He is eligible to return November 6th for the Canucks’ match against the Red Wings.
