Search of Lake Ontario for missing freighter crewmember from N.S. called off

TORONTO – The U.S. Coast Guard says it has ended the search of Lake Ontario for a crewmember missing from a Canadian-flagged freighter.

The Canadian Provider contacted authorities on Wednesday afternoon to report that a 59-year-old crewmember from Nova Scotia hadn’t been seen since earlier in the day.

Gary Carlton is believed to have fallen off the lake freighter and was last seen when the ship was in American waters.

U.S. Coast Guard officials say the search for Carlton continued for about 25 continuous hours and covered more than 8,100 square kilometres.

The Canadian Coast Guard assisted in the search that covered an area from central Lake Ontario to the St. Lawrence.
