Rick Rypien to face discipline after attacking Wild fan

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Like the 6-2 loss to Minnesota wasn’t enough. There will be fall-out from a Vancouver Canuck centre’s meltdown last night.

Rick Rypien was stomping back to the dressing room after being hit with a double-minor penalty for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct when he went after a Wild fan in the stands. He was quickly pulled away by a teammate, but not fast enough.

The NHL heavyweights, including Gary Bettman and Bill Daly, are expected to be involved in disciplining Rypien. He could be suspended “indefinitely” today, with a firm number set in the next couple of days. Rypien may warm the bench for up to 10 games.

News1130 Sports Director Ann Schmaltz isn’t as concerned with what the league will dish out. “I’m more concerned with what the team [and] the Canucks organization is going to do, if they’re going to offer any discipline.”

Ann says even though Rypien is known as a hot-head, his behaviour last night is still disappointing. “Mike Gillis uses words like character, integrity and discipline. Obviously, last night Rick Rypien didn’t keep those words at all in the back of his mind.”

Rypien ended up with 19 penalty minutes in the game.
