Tenants forced out by highrise fire may have to wait 3 months before moving home

TORONTO – Some residents forced out of a Toronto apartment building due to a fire may have to wait three months before they are allowed home.

Hundreds of people living at 200 Wellesley Street East have not been able to return home due to structural damage caused by the fire late last month.

About 60 percent of the north tower tenants should be allowed back into their units in five weeks, while those living on some floors may have to wait up to three months.

Toronto Community Housing says more than 300 units in the building’s south tower have been given the all clear for tenants to return.

It says displaced residents will get a one-time clothing allowance of between $150 and $300.

They will also not be charged for November’s rent and receive $10 per day for every day they stay with family or friends.

Residents have slowly been allowed to return in the last few weeks.

A block of 24 units on the 23rd and 25th floors of the building’s south tower were cleared for occupancy last week.

Last month’s fire forced the evacuation of about 1,700 people
