Leafs beat the Habs, 3-2, in home opener

TORONTO, Ont. -It was the night Leafs fans have been waiting way.

A brand new NHL season kicked off, Thursday, as the Toronto Maple Leafs faced the Montreal Canadiens at the Air Canada Centre

The Leafs won 3-2 against the Habs as they opened their 93rd season.

Fans couldn’t hold their excitement about the Leafs big win. Several of them spoke with 680News outside of Real Sports Bar & Grill, located at 15 York St.

This man said, “I think that’s amazing.”

Even some Habs fans were impressed, including this man who said “I feel like the Leafs prove[d] a point tonight. They showed a lot of strength and showed a lot of determination […].

Meantime, a street party at Yonge-Dundas Square was part of the Leafs home opener festivities.

The event started at noon and wrapped up at 11 p.m. It featured appearances from former NHL greats, as well as musical acts Hedley, Down with Webster and Hey Rosetta. An artificial rink was also set up in the middle of the square.

“The atmosphere down here is amazing, you know, Toronto is a great place for hockey in the first place, and the fans are definitely coming out to show their support, so I am excited about that,” Zack told 680News.

Yonge Street was closed in both directions, from Gerrard to Richmond, for the NHL “Face Off” event. By 10 p.m., the closure was limited to Dundas through Queen, but was not expected to be fully lifted until 6 a.m. Friday.

During the shutdown, Dundas Street remained open for traffic and Shuter Street stayed open for traffic entering and exiting the Eaton Centre.

“They’re going to try and have some access. You should be able to cross Dundas and utilize Shuter to get into the parking garage over at the Eaton Centre,” Const. Hugh Smith with Toronto Traffic Services told 680News.
