VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Twenty-one mayors are joining the B.C. Federation Labour in calling for higher minimum wage in the province. B.C. has the lowest minimum wage in Canada at $8 an hour.
The mayors want to see it raised to $10.
The federation is sending the premier a letter signed by the mayors, which includes those from Vancouver, North Vancouver and Delta.
Burnaby mayor Derek Corrigan says the wage should not have been allowed to drop to the lowest spot in Canada. “There should have been incremental increases over the years,” he says.
The Canadian Federation of Independent Business showed up with friends representing the restaurant and retail sectors, saying the wage hike threatens the jobs of the very people it’s supposed to help.
