Mississauga Transit gets security cameras

TTC riders are certainly used to them. Now Mississauga Transit is following Toronto’s lead and has started the process of installing security cameras on all 439 buses and at the terminals.

Transit director Geoff Marinoff told 680News the surveillance cameras have become a valuable tool in the transit industry to help prevent crime and also to provide evidence when a crime has been committed. He said they also act as a deterrent.

“Unless the hard drive is removed no one can monitor the camera. There are strict controls and a policy for what are the reasons for accessing the video,” he explained.

One-hundred-fifty-thousand people ride Mississauga Transit every day and Marinoff believes most riders welcome the extra security.

“They believe that there’s less of a chance of something happening because it’s all recorded and that means there’s a chance that if you do something you’ll get caught,” he said.

The cost to install the cameras is $2.8-million. The cameras are already up at the City Centre and Westwood Mall terminals but won’t be turned on until the new year.

Brampton Transit installed cameras on its buses and at its terminals last year. The TTC completed installation of them system-wide last year and the video has helped in the court cases involving several cases of violence against TTC operators and passengers.
