New governor-general to emphasize “smart and caring” Canada

OTTAWA – Canadians looking for a glimpse into the thinking of the incoming governor general need search no further than the theme David Johnston has given to his installation ceremony.

Friday’s ceremony is entitled “The Smart and Caring Nation: A Call to Service.”

The day’s events will be steeped in history, with many elements paying tribute to fallen soldiers, current-day members of the Armed Forces, or children who hope to be future leaders.

But Johnston’s friends say the “smart and caring nation” theme is equally important to the life-long intellectual who has dedicated his life to encouraging innovative thought.

The morning ceremony will include veterans, children, a pee-wee hockey player, a community volunteer and an Olympic athlete, along with the usual pomp and circumstance on Parliament Hill and then back at Rideau Hall.

The 69-year-old Johnston is Canada’s 28th governor general, replacing the charismatic Michaelle Jean.
