Weekend events celebrate the best of books, boutiques and beer

TORONTO, Ont. – Three festivals will take place over the weekend highlighting the best of Toronto’s independent scene.

The Word on the Street festival will take over the Queen’s Park area on Sunday.

The free event is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Queen’s Park/Queen’s Park Crescent will be closed in both directions from Bloor to Wellesley streets from Saturday at 9 a.m. to Sunday at 11:59 p.m.

The event features Man Booker Prize winner Yann Martel and other top authors for adults and children.

There will be 15 event stages and tents, such as the Scotiabank Giller Prize Bestsellers Stage and the Money Matters Tent, among others.

Toronto Mayor David Miller will be signing copies of his first book, Witness to a City: David Miller’s Toronto.

His book isn’t a memoir, but features a series of profiles on “extraordinary people” Miller met during his two terms in office.

Beer lovers will be able to bond this weekend at the first Toronto Beer Week.

The event runs from September 20 – 26 and consist of beer tasting, brewing demonstrations, and seminars on beer varieties.

It will be a celebration of Toronto’s craft beer movement with microbreweries, brew pubs and restaurants offering samples of beers and food.

Participants can also take part in blind tasting testing, beer pairing, and classes on fermentation at different locations around the city.

If vintage or unique clothing is more you’re taste, The Clothing Show takes place this weekend featuring more than 300 booths.

The event is Canada’s largest vintage and independent designer show.

A runway fashion show will take place each day highlighting new labels.
